The Legacy of Black Pride
The first Black Pride event took place in 1991 in Washington, D.C., igniting a powerful movement dedicated to affirming and uplifting Black LGBTQ and same-gender-loving (SGL) communities. Born out of a critical need for inclusion, these celebrations emerged in response to the disproportionate impact of the early HIV/AIDS epidemic on Black communities and the lack of representation within mainstream LGBTQ spaces.

More than 30 years later, Black Pride events have grown into a nationwide and global phenomenon, offering spaces where Black queer joy, resilience, and culture are centered and celebrated. Often aligned with LGBTQ Pride Month or Fourth of July weekend, these gatherings now engage an estimated 600,000 Black LGBTQ and SGL individuals annually, according to the Center for Black Equity. From grassroots origins to expansive celebrations of identity and resistance, Black Pride remains a vital force for visibility, advocacy, and community.
